Promise Church is a gospel-centered, missional community that seeks to raise up devoted disciples of Jesus Christ.
Our Values
-
We believe that everything we do is ultimately grounded upon the gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel is the good news that God chose to enter into history through his Son and save sinners by grace through faith. Through his life, death, and resurrection, Christ has won for us reconciliation with God. Our teaching and preaching is centered on this truth.
-
We believe that when Jesus saves sinners, they are redefined with a new, unshakeable identity as a child of God. This inevitably leads to a deeper devotion to Him. The more deeply we believe and embrace the reality of the gospel, the more we see all we are and all we do as gospel response. Therefore, we are committed to growing, learning and being equipped in all the depths of the gospel and its application in our discipleship. As we are changed from the inside by grace, we are compelled to not only know, but delight in God’s Word.
-
We believe every Christian is called to be the light and salt of the world, and share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We marvel that God would choose to not only save us, but send us too. The gospel makes us a church for others. We seek to obey the Great Commission and share the gospel to the ends of the earth and make disciples of all nations. We do this through our partnership with our missionaries and various missions organizations.
Our STory
Promise Church’s story is one of God’s enduring and ever-present grace. Our journey as a church began on January 13, 1980, when the first service of 39 people was held in a deacon’s upper room as Orange County Young Nak Presbyterian Church (OCYN), a Korean immigrant church. On January 5th, 1992, the OCYN English Ministry held our first service, recognizing the unique needs and cultural differences of our English-speaking members.
30 grateful years later, on June 5th, 2022, with the blessing of our mother church, we took a significant step towards autonomy by rebranding ourselves as Promise Church of Orange County. This rebranding represents our commitment to pursue self-governance in vision, operations, and financial management while maintaining a close relationship with OCYN.
While we have embraced our independence, we deeply value the ongoing partnership with our mother church. Although our language and culture are different, we are united in Christ as one church. Promise Church treasures our rich heritage, understanding that our roots in OCYN are an immense blessing. At the same time, we also recognize our unique place and reach in our community, and desire to take ownership and initiative as Promise Church.
We are pursuing an “interdependent model”, in which OCYN and Promise Church act independently in terms of operational leadership, budget, and weekly ministry, but remain united in partnership in our overall vision, education ministries, and in certain aspects of our missions and finances.
